The Mayor of Amatrice, Sergio Pirozzi, was so touched by the many donations given by both our friends at Gran Caffe L’Aquila and the Italy America Society that he has agreed to come to Philadelphia himself for a thank you dinner and follow up fundraiser.
Michele Morelli & Riccardo Longo went to Amatrice in late October to present the check to the mayor and survey the damage themselves. See the photos below to get an idea of the total devastation.
We told the mayor that Philadelphians and the Italian American community of Philadelphia are ready to help. This tragic event has inevitably brought us back to our memories of our own earthquake of April 6th 2009 and thus compels us to help our brothers and sisters in Amatrice.
(See the Italian televised interview with subtitles below)
When Mayor Pirozzi arrives in Philadelphia for the benefit dinner in January we will present a check to him which we hope will be much larger than the 1st.
(Stay tuned for the date and details of the Amatrice dinner in January. As soon as Mayor Pirozzi confirms a date we will have further details) In the meantime, please donate so we can express the generosity of our city to a devastated town in need.
The names of all donors will be presented to Mayor Pirozzi along with the check. 100% of your donations will go directly to the town of Amatrice.
