The traditional dessert of Siena, Tuscany. Panforte is a dried fruitcake style dessert bread made from all-natural, healthy ingredients such as dried fruit, honey, nuts and spices. It was historically called panpepato, but later the local Sienese changed the name to Panforte due to its powerful flavor profile.
Many variations of the original recipe have been established, although debates continue as to which type is the tastiest!
This classic Panforte, made with candied orange and lemon peel, almonds, honey and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, mace and coriander).
They are easily paired with a dessert wine or with a sharp cheese. However, a new trend is incorporating this sweet into a multitude of dishes, salads, cheese trays, filets, and even bacon-wrapped chicken.
We also recommend pairing it with coffee in the morning or of course just enjoying Panforte on its own.
