Pollastrini is the only Italian company that produces canned Mediterranean sardines. Salvatore Pollastrini started packing sardines in 1889 in the town of Anzio, near Rome. Today, Pollastrini still employs the same sustainable fishing method of the past, that makes use of the “vuzzo” or “gozzo”, the typical fishing boat equipped with two or more “lampare”, large crystal spheres once fueled with oil and now with lamps, that flash an intense light in the dark and are an irresistible attraction for the sardines. These lights attract the sardines towards the nets which are pulled aboard, leaving the fish intact and without causing pain.
Deliciously preserved in oil, these wild-caught sardines are sourced solely from the Mediterranean Sea. They are a considerable source of protein (64%), vitamins B12, B3 and B2, A and D and several trace elements including phosphorus, sodium, calcium, iron, magnesium and selenium.
